Game Changer Review A Two Halves Tale
0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 1 Second

Game Changer, a Telugu venture of Director S. Shankar, positions itself as an action-packed political drama. It is led by Ram Charan, the charismatic Indian actor. The movie promises an explosive cinematic experience. However, it falters under the weight of the incoherent 1st half apart from the inconsistent storytelling. While in the movie, there are moments wherein the film did shine, particularly within the 2nd half, it did struggle to live up to the ambitious title of the movie.

Game Change Offers Uneven Narrative Structure

Game Changer’s 1st half is the chaotic blend of disparate elements that is designed seemingly to showcase the action hero, Ram Charan’s persona. Further, the storyline meanders via generic tropes, covering the daring train flight sequences (Uttar Pradesh) to the protagonist’s college days flashback that remains riddled with anger issues apart from the love story that went awry. Despite such attempts to establish the back story of Ram Nandan, a role played by Ram Charan, the narrative does lack originality and coherence.

2nd half of the movie, however, did take a sharp turn as it introduced the socially charged message regarding corruption and electoral reforms, which remained anchored by Nandan and his battle against Bobbili Mopidevi (S.J. Suryah), the corrupt minister. Such a portion of the movie is much more focused. It offered direction’s semblance, as it tackles quite larger societal and political issues.

Ram Charan and His Commanding Presence

Vishakhapatnam’s district collector, Ram Nandan, is the quintessential action hero; he tackles the adversaries both with fiery and fists rhetoric. Ram Charan’s performance can be said to be the saviour of the film’s graces, as he effortlessly commands attention on screen. The dual role played by Charan, being the activist father and protagonist, added emotional depth, even though the script prioritized the spectacle over the substance.

Character Development or Missed Opportunities?

Kiara Advani as Deepika, part of the supporting cast in the movie, remains underutilized. Her role remained largely relegated to the romantic interludes and offered pep talks to the protagonist. The advice she gave him to channel anger in a constructive way set up the character arc for Nandan. However, she had limited time on screen, and the lack of agency, well, did diminish her and the overall impact on her.

As for the portrayal of Mopidevi by S.J. Suryah, it did hams the way through the role with all over-theatrics that, when entertaining at times, detract from the gravitas of the movie.

More Action, Less Logic

Game Changer did deliver a lot of high-octane action sequences. However, it came at plausibility expense. From fighting the gangsters despite being handcuffed to engaging within the Mopidevi, a lot of strain and credibility exploitation can be seen within Ram Nandan’s character. All of these moments are just crafted to give a thrill to the audience, and truthfully, they are quite disconnected from the serious themes of the movie.

Game Changer’s Social Message Lacked Depth

The movie made an attempt to tackle weighty issues like electoral malpractices, bureaucracy roles, and corruption within governance. However, its execution is quite heavy-handed. It lacks the nuance.

Mopidevi and Ram Nandan’s dynamic, too, optimizes the narrative’s black-and-white morality, thereby leaving very little room for introspection or complexity. As for the dialogues, even though they were impactful, they bordered on the preachy.

Game Changer Visual Appeal and the Technical Aspects

The directorial touch of Shankar is evident within the visual flair of the movie, with the colourfully staged musical numbers as well as the stylistic flourishes which elevate some of the sequences. But all of these moments, they are far few between. They are not able to compensate for the lack of overall coherence. As for the cinematography and background score, it adds to the grandeur of the movie. However, it cannot mask the structural flaws therein.

Game Changer: To Watch It or Not?

The film of contrasts is what we would call this film. Despite the 2nd half redeeming certain shortcomings within the narrative, the experience overall gets weighed down by the incoherent 1st half as well as the originality lack.

Ram Charan shined within the dual role. As for the film’s underlying message, it resonated to a certain degree. As for the execution, it leaves much to be desired. For Ram Charan’s fans and the fans of the high-octane action, the Game Changer may offer certain entertaining moments. As for the others, the movie, well, it struggles to justify the lofty ambitions. So, the verdict is, watch the movie for Ram Charan. However, the expectations must be controlled. Do not hope high. Especially if you are Kiara’s fan, try to avoid the movie. Her role is even quite less than your expectations with her role.
