LSG vs MI: Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow hosted the electric match. The match between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians (MI) brought in a high-stakes encounter, which lived up to the billing. Within the match, where the momentum swung just like a pendulum, LSG ensured to held the neve for securing the 12-run victory in the Indian Premier League march. However, the real story lies in the subplots— with young guns stepping up, captains under fire, and the chase, which clearly defied all the logic.

LSG vs MI: Rishabh Pant’s Redemption and a Masterclass by Mitchell Marsh

Rishabh Pant, the LSG’s marquee, was a ₹27 crore signing. He walked in the game with 17 runs in the 3 matches. The pressure, it was quite palpable. However, his team did not need his bat to the fire now. Instead, it was Mitchell Marsh who stole the spotlight, blistering with 60 runs off 32 balls. He set the tone quite early in the game. Then came David Miller, who achieved 27 of 14, and Aiden Markram at 53. They together offered the late surge. It pushed LSG to 203/8— only 2nd 200+ total at Ekana in the history of the Indian Premier League.

For MI, Hardik Pandya and his 5-wicket haul giving 5/36 was a perfect captain performance. However, his ability to contain the death and the overs proved quite costly. As for Trent Boult, the rare off-night and the expensive spell of Ashwani Kumar (0/46) highlighted the vulnerability within the bowling of MI in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.

Valiant Effort of Sky was in Vain

The chase made by Mumbai was the tale of 2 halves. After losing Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks, Suryakumar Yadav (50 for 31) and Naman Dhir, 49 off 20, launched the stunning counterattack. The fearless hitting of Dhir, including the 3 sixes in the over, threatened to take the game away. However, his dismissal by Digvesh Rathi (1/21) shifted the momentum.

Pandya, with 28 off 16, fought to the end. However, the all-Indian pace attack of LSG, Avesh Khan (1/38), Shardul Thakur (1/28), and Akash Deep (1/33) held their nerve within the final overs.

The defining moment. The near-perfect 19th over by Avesh, where he was able to concede just 7 runs, left the MI team with the improbable 22 off the last 6 balls.

Big Takeaways

  • Pant leadership led to overbatting. The tactical acumen of Pant, which led to sharp field placements and some aggressive bowling changes, outshone the batting struggles. His decision to trust Digvesh in the middle offers did pay off well.
  • The middle-order concern of MI. The labored 18 off 20, by Tilak Varma, exposed the over-reliance of MI on Hardik and Sky. With Rohit Sharma getting sidelined because of a knee injury, the batting depth just looked thin.
  • The bowling depth of LSG was good. Without Mayank Yadav, the lesser-known seamers of LSG stepped up. The return of Akash Deep from the injury added much-needed firepower.

What is Next in the Indian Premier League Matches?

For the LSG team, the win was a perfect statement. However, for MI, the questions are mounting. They had 3 losses in the 4 games, and the playoff berth already looks quite distant. As Pandya said about the match, they are not panicking. But they need to fix mistakes quickly.

As for the Lucknow fans, they celebrated it again in 2022. On the night when the stars were flickering instead of shining, it was the unsung heroes who scripted the drama.

Brief Scores:

LSG scored 203/8, with Marsh at 60, Markram at 53, Hardik at 5/36. They beat MI 191/5 with SKY on 50, Dhir on 49, and Digvesh at 1/21 by 12 runs.

Man of the match was Mitchell Marsh.

Stay tuned! The best is yet to come.
