Joe Biden on Sunday addressed the nation, mourning former President Jimmy Carter’s death. He honoured his legacy of humility, integrity and service.

Carter, who passed away in Plains, Georgia, at 100, has been in hospice care for approximately 2 years. In the speech, Biden reflected upon the 5-decade-long friendship he had with the 39th President while he subtly criticized President-elect Donald Trump.

Opening his remarks, Biden described Carter as his “dear friend”. He called him a role model for living a life of purpose and principle. He further praised Carter’s character. He said, “Some look at Jimmy Carter and see a man of a bygone era with honesty and character. Faith and humility mattered, but I don’t believe it’s a bygone era. We’d all do well to try to be more like Jimmy Carter.”

Biden shared a cherished memory with Carter from the 1970s when Carter was Georgia’s Governor, and he sought Biden’s help with the presidential campaign. Recalling the memory, Biden said, “I need you to help with my campaign.”

He further remarked, “When I endorsed him, it was not just for his policies but for his character, his decency, and the honor he exuded.”

While addressing the crowd, Biden when asked about what Trump, the President-elect, could take from Carter’s legacy, Biden gave an emphatic response. He stated, “Decency. Decency, decency, decency. Can you imagine Jimmy Carter walking past someone in need or judging someone by their appearance or speech?”

The comment by Biden came in as a subtle critique of the divisive rhetoric of Trump, contrasting the same with the compassion and humility of Carter.

In his statement, Trump acknowledged the efforts of Carter to improve Americans’ lives during this pivotal time in U.S. history. He emphasized the political differences while describing Carter. As the man who “truly loved and respected the U.S. and all it stands for.” He further added, “He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that, I give him my highest respect.”

Jimmy Carter’s Lasting Legacy

The life of Carter, both during and after the presidency, was celebrated across the political spectrum. From his work with Habitat for Humanity to the way he advocated for Human rights, Carter did exemplify public service.

As Biden noted, “He showed us what it means to live a life of meaning and purpose.”
